Replace, Refinish, or Convert?

Refinishing can freshen a sound tub, but it will not fix a cracked fiberglass floor, a tub that flexes when you step in, or a leaking drain. If the tub moves, leaks, or has damage underneath, replacement is the lasting fix.

If nobody takes baths anymore, a tub-to-shower conversion may be the better choice. If you enjoy baths, replacement is the chance to choose a deeper soaking tub or a better-fitting alcove tub.

Size matters. Most alcove tubs are a standard length, but some older bathrooms have unusual openings. We measure the alcove, the doorway, and the path through the house so the new tub actually fits before anything is ordered.

What We Find Under Old Tubs

Years of small leaks end up under the tub. In older homes, it is common to find a softened subfloor or stained framing once the tub comes out. We show you what we find and agree the repair in writing before continuing.

Cast-iron tubs are heavy and sometimes have to be broken up to remove; acrylic and fiberglass tubs come out more easily. Either way, floors and stairs are protected on the way out.

Licensing and Permits

Tub replacement is plumbing work, and California licenses contractors through the Contractors State License Board (CSLB). The B-2 scope covers tiling, flooring, drywall, and minor plumbing and electrical fixture work, which covers a typical tub swap. Moving the drain or rerouting supply lines is a bigger job, since B-2 contractors may not alter load-bearing walls or foundations or substantially change major plumbing, electrical, or mechanical systems.

When a permit is needed we file it with the City of Fremont Permit Center at the Development Services Center, 39550 Liberty Street and schedule inspection before the surround goes on. If the rest of the room needs work, see full bathroom remodeling; for a tub-and-shower combination, see our shower remodel page.

Signs It Is Time

Cracks or soft spots in a fiberglass floor, rust breaking through enamel, chips that keep spreading, a drain that leaks into the ceiling below, or caulk that will not stay sealed because the tub moves: each says the tub is done. Sometimes the tub is fine but the surround is failing, with loose tile or soft drywall behind it. Then we may keep the tub and rebuild the surround with proper waterproofing, which costs less. We recommend the smaller job when it will do.

Choosing a Tub

Acrylic is light, warm, and repairable. Enameled steel is affordable but can chip. Cast iron holds heat and lasts for decades but is heavy and costs more. A deep soaking tub may need a larger water heater, so we check that too. If stepping into a tub is hard for someone in the house, look at a lower-sided model or a walk-in shower instead.

When the job is done we fill the tub, check the drain, and walk you through the work. Product details and any permit sign-off go into your project folder.

Keeping the House Clean

A tub replacement is a messy job in a small room. We lay floor protection from the door to the bathroom, seal the doorway with plastic, and remove debris as we go rather than stacking it in the house. The toilet and sink usually stay usable for most of the job. Once the new tub is set, we fill it to check the drain and look for leaks before the surround goes on, so any problem is found while it is still easy to fix. We put every one of these decisions in writing before work begins, so the plan you approve is the plan the crew builds, and nothing important is left to a conversation on the job site.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to replace a bathtub?

Usually a few days for a straight swap, longer if the subfloor needs repair or the surround is retiled. Any inspection by the City of Fremont Permit Center is scheduled before walls close.

Do I need a permit to replace a tub?

A like-for-like swap often does not; moving the drain usually does, and we file with the City of Fremont Permit Center.

How do I know a tub installer is licensed?

Look up the license with the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) and confirm a $25,000 contractor's license bond is on file.
